Rare dog and cat companions, done properly. My Only Friend adds server-authoritative pets with 56 expanded visual variants, training, working orders, combat, rosters, wildlife and persistence. Damage, ownership and rewards are decided by the server; the client only asks and displays.

A real animated companion

Companions are genuine animals using the vanilla animation system: they walk, run, idle, lie down, attack and bark.

Orders and stances

Follow, Stay, Sit, Guard and Recall, with Passive, Defensive or Aggressive stances.

Combat and takedowns

Dogs bite and pursue zombies and level up from kills. Specials include silent takedowns, throat bites, hamstrings and a Loyal Protector lunge when you're swarmed.

Care and bonding

Pet, feed, water and heal your companion. Bond grows over time, eases your panic and stress, and losing a bonded friend hurts.

Big roster

Labrador, Pug, Doberman, Pitbull, an Espelette cat and 56 namespaced coat variants rebuilt from Man's Best Friend.

Training and work

13 ranked skills with breed affinities support fetch, forage, zombie-only hunting, hauling, cargo and wound care.

Build 42.22 models (3.0.1) — ground and worn models repaired for Project Zomboid Build 42.22.
Development overhaul for 42.21 — owned companion control and animation graph through Faded Java Loader, repaired breed motion, and persistent dismiss and recall.
Genetics and care — genetics and aging, private veterinary care, original supplies, and craftable dog houses and flap doors.
Gear and controls — visible pet gear, mass-limited cargo, and CSR/ClearView-styled controls with a pet preview.
Testing status — headless and engine-parser tests pass; live graphical and two-client acceptance are still pending.

First steps

Start a new character. By default you begin with a companion (type, sex, name and bond are sandbox options).
Open the command wheel with K, or use the compact HUD to give orders.
Keep your companion fed and watered. A starving dog weakens and can collapse.
If it ever drifts or unloads, use Recover companion.

Requirements

Project Zomboid Build 42.21.0. Version 3.0.0 requires Faded Java Loader 0.6.3 on the server and every client. Single-player, split-screen host and dedicated-server safe. About 80 sandbox options.
